EnerJet Needleless Acne Scar Treatment

One of the biggest challenges in Aesthetics Medicine may be the treatment of Acne Scars. 80% of people world wide suffer from acne at some point of their lives. Scarring occurs during the healing phase of active acne. Inflammation depletes the skin of collagen and together with the formation of scar tissues, results in the undulating skin which we observe as acne scars.

The treatment of these scars remains a challenge today. This is due to the complexity of acne scars formation, the many types of acne scarring, as well as the differences in patient response to different treatments.

Patients with acne scars often carry with them psychological and emotional burdens. The effects can range from embarrassment, low self esteem to depression. Many patients go through a series of different treatments, but remain dissatisfied with the results.

Current treatment options include dermal hyaluronic fillers, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, laser skin resurfacing, radiofrequency skin resurfacing, subcision and microneedling. There are limitations to these treatments which includes costs to patients, downtime associated with treatments, incomplete resolution of scars, recurrence of scars, invasiveness of treatments and side effects associated with treatments. Of particular importance in our darker skin society is the risks of Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) associated with energy based treatments, such as lasers.

What is the EnerJet technology?

The EnerJet technology is a novel technology that utilises pneumatic energy to deliver micro droplets of skin enhancing solutions such as hyaluronic acid into the dermal layer of the skin. The solution enters the skin through a tiny hole and spreads laterally, generating an area of controlled injury. The body then respond to this injury by stimulating fibroblasts in the skin to produce more collagen and elastin. The result is improved skin thickening and properties, with a long term skin remodelling effect.

EnerJet is effective in treating a variety of skin conditions such as acne scars, thin and dehydrated skin over the dorsum of the hands, neck and decolletage. A unique method of utilising this technology has also been developed to treat the sagging skin.

What is EnerJet Acne Scar Treatment?

The EnerJet Acne Scar Treatment utilises this unique EnerJet technology to deliver tiny droplets of high molecular weight hyaluronic acid into the skin of the affected areas. The controlled micro-trauma breaks the scar tissue from the inside and release the deep attachments of the scars to underlying structures. These micro droplets are placed approximately 1cm apart to cover the entire area which has been affected. The spread of the solution under the skin allow the entire affected area to be treated with minimal disruption to the skin surface.

Over the medium to long term, the mechanical as well as chemical stimulation of neocollagenesis produces a long lasting continual improvement of these difficult to treat scars.

Why should I choose this treatment?

Acne scars are notoriously difficult to treat, as many acne scar sufferers would attest to. Over the years, many methods have been developed for the treatment of acne scars. Some of the common treatments for acne scars include lasers; both ablative and non-ablative, subcison and filler injections, each with their own merits and limitations.

Laser devices uses laser energy to remove the surface of the skin and encourages remodelling by thermal stimulation, with a dermal wound healing response. This can cause epidermal injury with prolonged down time, and can have side effects of post inflammatory hyper-pigmentation or other pigmentary problems. As EnerJet is not heat based, unlike ultrasound and radio-frequency, it has less tendency to cause post treatment pigmentary problems.

EnerJet is also a needleless delivery system, thus more acceptable for someone who is looking to have a minimally invasive procedure that does not involve the use of needles, and has a short down time. Effectively, it is the treatment of subcision and intradermal hyaluronic acid injections, without the use of needles.

Who is suitable for EnerJet Acne Scar Treatments?

EnerJet Acne Scar Treatment is suitable for anyone who is suffering from acne scars.

How long does an EnerJet Acne Scar Treatment session take and what should I expect?

A typical EnerJet Acne Scar Treatment takes about 30 minutes to complete.

Before the treatment, our doctor will assess your skin and suitability for the treatment. We will also explain to you the procedure and expected outcomes. A written consent will be obtained. Prior to the treatment, a local anaesthetic cream is applied for approximately 20 minutes. During the treatment you will notice occasional loud noises from the machine, which comes from the generator that is working to deliver the high kinetic energy of these treatment solutions. You may feel mild discomfort when the skin enhancing solution penetrates through the skin.

After the treatment, you will notice tiny bumps over the treatment area which will dissipate over 1 to 2 hours. There will be a mild swelling over the treatment areas which typically lasts 1 to 2 days. The tiny holes through which the skin enhancing solution enters the skin will form a scab which will fall off naturally over the next 3 to 5 days.

Is the EnerJet Acne Scar treatment painful?

Local anesthesia cream is applied prior to treatment for approximately 20 minutes. Most patients feel minimal discomfort and find the pain level acceptable.

What are the side-effects?

This is a very safe procedure with little side effects. If any, the patient may experience slight swelling over the treatment area.

As is with all treatments, it is advisable to protect the treatment area from UV light, be it natural sunlight or tanning beds, by using a good strength sun block. General hygiene is also important to prevent any infection through the tiny breaks in the skin.

When can I see results?

Patients can expect to see a gradual improvement with every treatment. It is recommended that the treatment be repeated every 1 to 2 months until a desired outcome is achieved. Usually a series of 3 to 6 treatments are required for optimal results.

Can the EnerJet treatment be combined with other treatments?

Definitely! In fact, better results can be obtained when different treatment modalities are combined together. The types of treatments and order at which it should be undertaken vary from patient to patient and we encourage you to speak to our doctor regarding the best option for you. Some of the treatments we can combine with the EnerJet treatment includes chemical peels and lasers.
