Hair Loss

Hair loss, also known as alopecia, is a common issue that can affect both men and women. There are many different types of hair loss, the most common of which is androgenetic alopecia, otherwise known as Male Pattern Hair Loss (MPHL) or Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL). There are multiple factors that can influence hair loss including, hormonal changes, genetics, stress, diet and lifestyle and certain medications. Whilst we may not be able to control all of these factors, there are many treatments available to encourage hair growth and reduce hair fall.

How Do We Assess Hair Loss?

As there are many causes of hair loss, it is important to determine the underlying factors in order to be successful with hair treatments. Our doctors will take a full history, examine the scalp and may perform blood tests to rule out nutritional deficiencies or chronic diseases that may be causing your hair loss.

The Hair Cycle

What Happens In Hair Loss?

In Androgenetic Alopecia, the Anagen (Growing) Phase of the hair cycle is shortened, resulting in more frequent shedding of hair and hair loss. Due to the shortened Anagen phase, the hair follicles also may not fully mature and thicken, leading to thinner hair strands which further potentiates the hair thinning effect. Even though there may be some overlap between male and female pattern hair loss, the causative factors differ between the two genders.

Male pattern hair loss tends to be heavily influenced by androgens (male hormones), hence giving rise to the name Androgenetic Alopecia. Whilst there is often still a hormonal component to Female Pattern Hair Loss, the mechanisms are less understood. Therefore, the pattern of hair loss is typically different for men and women. Men tend to see hair loss first at the front and vertex of their scalp whereas women tend to see a wider parting and more visible scalp.

Another type of hair loss common to women is Telogen Effluvium – where hairs in the Anagen phase are converted to the Telogen phase, resulting in increased hair shedding and reduced hair growth. This condition commonly occurs suddenly as a result of a major stressor which can have an impact on our body’s physiology. The symptoms can often recover after the period of stress is over.

The aim with hair treatments is to balance out the hair cycle, promote healthy hair growth and reduce shedding.

Causes of Hair Loss

What Treatments Are Available?

As with many chronic conditions, the best way to approach hair loss is to treat the underlying cause if possible and restore the hair cycle to its natural state. In order to achieve this, we recommend working together with a doctor to create a holistic, custom plan tailored to your goals and lifestyle. There are many treatments available for both male and female pattern hair loss including topicals, oral medications, and in-clinic lasers and treatments.

Low Level Light Therapy with Healite II

The Healite II is an FDA-Approved Low Level Light Therapy device that uses a specially selected 633nm wavelength to reduce inflammation, increase blood flow and nutrient delivery and revitalise hair follicles. This treatment promotes the production of essential proteins like keratin, leading to stronger and more robust hair strands. The LED light also reduces sebum production within the scalp, reducing the chance of congestion that can worsen hair loss.

Hair Regen: Thulium Laser + ExCoBio HRLV Exosomes

Hair Regen, a hair and scalp treatment that combines the power of a Thulium Cosmesceutical Delivery System Laser and ASCE plus HRLV Exosome Complex. The Thulium Laser creates small channels in the scalp for better penetration of the ASCE plus HRLV exosomes. This advanced exosome therapy boasts 10 types of growth factors, working synergistically to stimulate robust hair growth. It does so by sending messages to our hair cells to normalise the hair cycle and increase the number of hairs in the growth phase. Enriched with 30 nourishing ingredients, it not only promotes a healthier scalp but also enhances overall hair vitality.

Hydrafacial Keravive

HydraFacial Keravive is a gentle hair treatment for all hair types. It is designed to cleanse, stimulate, nourish and hydrate your scalp for fuller- and healthier-looking hair. Hair loss can be perpetuated by inflammation from an unhealthy and congested scalp. HydraFacial’s proprietary Vortex Technology easily dissolves and removes impurities from the scalp and hair follicle. The Keravive Peptide Complex Solution delivers a hyper-concentrated blend of biomimetic growth factors and skin proteins that hydrate and nourish the scalp. The Hydrafacial Keravive keeps the scalp clear to reduce build up and inflammation, and provides a clean canvas for other treatments to penetrate better.

Calecim Advanced Hair System

The Calecim Advanced Hair System contains PTT-6®, a clinically proven combination of stem-cell derived fibronectins, glycoproteins, collagen, and hyaluronic acid, that work synergistically to stimulate skin renewal at the cellular level to improve hair health. This treatment is combined with microneedling to enhance penetration of the product. A course of treatment has been shown to increase both hair count and hair thickness.

Hair Restart

Hair Restart is a laser treatment that uses a non-ablative Er:YAG wavelength to stimulate dormant hair follicles without damaging the surrounding tissue. This specialised wavelength reduces inflammation, stimulates blood flow and increases overall hair growth. By improving the quality of the hair follicles, the hair grown is also thicker and denser than before.

Autologous Micrograft

An autologous micrograft procedure uses your own hair follicles to stimulate hair growth. Your own scalp tissues are extracted with a small punch biopsy needle and the tissue samples are processed on the spot for injection into the thinning areas on the scalp. The micrografts stimulate growth of new hair follicles and improve the thickness of existing hair. It is important to treat hair loss early as this treatment only works well if the biopsies taken contain viable hair follicles.
