HOW DOES RADIESSE® WORK?
RADIESSE® is a semi-solid, cohesive injectable implant that is made from calcium hydroxylapatite which occurs naturally in the body and is the primary mineral constituent of bone and teeth. The semi-solid nature of this filler is created by suspending the calcium hydroxylapatite in a gel carrier.
At about two or three months after the procedure, the gel carrier starts to be absorbed by the body. The calcium beads of the filler remain and the body then builds collagen to fill in the spaces where the gel carrier had previously existed. The calcium is also bio-degradable. As it gradually breaks down the newly produced collagen remains.
The result is a long-term yet non-permanent restoration and augmentation. The filler will last for up to 12 months but the skin tightening benefit will remain.
WHAT ARE THE INDICATIONS FOR RADIESSE® INJECTIONS?
RADIESSE® is indicated for subdermal injection for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, for restoration and/or correction of the signs of facial fat loss in the cheek area and lower face.
This product is indicated in people with facial lipoatrophy due to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
RADIESSE® is also indicated for the rejuvenation of the hand.
WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT RADIESSE®?
RADIESSE® is a unique product in that it provides both volume replacement and collagen bio stimulation. A highly viscous gel, this product provides long lasting aesthetic improvements. Unlike HA fillers, (hyaluronic acid) RADIESSE® is NOT indicated for injection in the lips or perioral area (around the mouth).
RADIESSE® is very popular in the United States and worldwide. As it is a very volumizing product, it is used for deep volume loss and facial contouring. It’s often a product of choice to use for jawline contouring, particularly in the male patient.
RADIESSE® is also a great product to use for volumization of the back of the hands.
RADIESSE® FOR HANDS
RADIESSE® is the only dermal filler indicated for use in the hands. For people who have hands that have become skinny with visibly apparent bones, tendons and veins, Radiesse can restore volume to the hands making the appear youthful and attractive. Over time it also produces collagen to tighten the skin on the hands.
WHAT AREAS CAN BE INJECTED WITH RADIESSE® FOR SKIN REJUVENATION?
Areas that can be injected successfully include the neck and the décolletage, arms, abdomen, knee areas, buttocks and thighs. This provides a redensification of the skin and is particularly interesting to use in patients with thin skin.
Excess skin will not disappear but will be less visible and tighter due to the stimulation of collagen and elastin.
By treating these areas, the local aged appearance can be improved by CaHA-generated collagen stimulation.
CAN RADIESSSE® BE USED FOR CELLULITE?
RADIESSE® can be used to improve the look of cellulite in the leg and buttocks area. By creating a redensification in the area, the appearance of unevenness can be reduced. These results are due to the biostimulatory effect of this injectable.
Multiple sessions are required to create desired results.
WHO IS SUITABLE FOR RADIESSSE®
Ideal candidates for RADIESSE® treatments are adults between the ages of 35 and 60 who have developed folds and wrinkles around their mouth and nose. Candidates who want the skin on their hands plumped are also ideal. It’s sometimes indicated for people who have experienced fat loss in their facial area due to HIV infection.
You should not use RADIESSE® if you have an allergy to any component of the product, if you have a history of severe allergies, if you have a bleeding disorder, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
PREPARING FOR RADIESSE®
WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER RADIESSE®?
You can expect immediate improvement in the treated skin. Within a week, you should experience full results.
RADIESSE® isn’t permanent, so you’ll have to repeat treatments as often as needed. For some people, treatments will only be required every two years. Others might need small maintenance injections in between major treatments.
Any swelling shouldn’t be minimum and can be expected for it to go down in no more than 36 hours. While you’ll be able to return to your normal routine immediately, you’ll need to avoid strenuous exercise or other activities. Your skin may be especially sensitive to sunlight, so avoid direct sun and heat for at least 24 hours or until your redness and swelling have gone down.
JUVEDERM VS RADIESSE®
There could be other alternatives that may work better for your unique situation, including fat fillers, collagen injections, Juvederm treatments, or face-lift procedures.
Juvederm® is another option you might want to consider. Juvederm® is made of a hyaluronic acid gel that mimics your body’s naturally-occurring hyaluronic acid. Similar to RADIESSE®, several different Juvederm® products that are meant for the lips, cheeks, nose and mouth.
Our doctor may also suggest other interventions in addition to fillers, including:
- A chemical peel
- Laser skin treatments
Whatever your decision, it’s important to find a clinic with the proper qualifications. You want the best treatment for your situation, so a doctor who’s had extensive experience administering RADIESSE® will be ideal.
